My First Blog Post

I was driving up the Green Bay side of Door County today, not really sure what I was going to find.  I had my eyes open for deer and any other wildlife that might jump out into the road.  Somebody's flag attached to a mailbox, waving in the breeze, sure looked like the tail end of a deer from a distance.  Glad there wasn't anybody behind me to see my overreaction.

So, I was just wandering, with no real destination in mind.  I know there's a little dead end road up ahead picturesquely called "Sunset Lane".  It's just a couple hundred feet long and dead ends at the edge of the waters of Green Bay.

It was cold.  Really cold.  The sun was already low on the horizon.  I parked my car at the end of the road.  Ice had started forming at the edge of the water.  The ice extended only about 10 feet into the water.  Beyond that the water was, well, chunky with ice forming on the surface.  The waves were splashing against ice formations.

I snapped a few pictures of naked trees, ice, and water.  I scrambled from one side of the landing to the other, snapping little scenes along the way.  Always keeping an eye on the sun.

My fingers hurt.  They were so cold.  I went back to my car and waited.  The light changed.  The clouds started coming alive.  I jumped out and snapped a few more frames.  Damn, my fingers were cold.  I ran back to my car and blew on my fingers to warm them up.

Sunset pictures are SOOOOOOOOOO overdone.  EVERYBODY takes sunset pictures.  I should just pull out my phone and snap a picture, share it on Facebook and Twitter and be done with it.

But I wait.

I decide that it doesn't matter.  Everybody takes sunset pictures for a reason.  They move us somehow.  We're taken by their beauty.  The colors amaze us.  No two are ever exactly the same.

Finally, I'm rewarded with this...

Door County Sunset-0258Door County Sunset-0258

The ice in the foreground almost looks like burning embers in a campfire.  The flare off the sun couldn't be placed more perfectly if I had done it in Photoshop (I did NOT).  The blue of the sky above the clouds.  The oranges.  The reds.  This is a Door County sunset.  This is one of the many reasons I love Door County.

That is why I just had to share yet another sunset picture.
